Rome
Marriage in Ancient Rome had small beginning's. Traditionally, it started with the separation of the Sabine Women. Romulus and his band of male immigrant's were rejected conubiam, the legal right to intermarriage from the Sabine's. According to Livy, Romulus and his men abduct the Sabine maiden's, but promise the man honorable marriage, in which they will enjoy the benefit's of property, citizenship, and children. These three thing's seem to define the purpose of marriage in Ancient Rome.
Africa
Both the families of the bride and groom would be scandalized if they did not adhere the custom. Negotiation is between the two families to come to an agreement of the price that the groom has to pay in order to marry the bride. This may seem like a purchase and a sale, but very opposite of a commercial transaction.
Greece
Marriages in Ancient Greece were arranged by the parent's of intended bride and groom. Girl's married between fourteen and eighteen, while men typically married in their twenties or even thirties .The rituals started in baths. The groom then would go to the bride's house in a chariot or a cart.

The issue of civil marriages is a major issue for secular Jew's, as well as member's of non-Orthodox stream's of Judaism who are required to meet the Orthodox standard's to be capable of marrying an Israel.
China
In feudal society, a marriage would be decided not by a young couple's love, but by their parents' desires. Only after a matchmaker's introduction and when parents considered the two family conditions were similar and could be matched, would the marriage procedure's go forward.
India
In most of North India the Hindu bride goes to live with stranger's in a home she's never visited. There she is sequestered and veiled an outsider who must learn to conform to the new way's . In South India, in sharp contrast marriages are preferred between cousin's.

Mesopotamia
In Mesopotamia if you marry, your future husband and his father in law have to sign a piece of paper. Once married, the girl became a full member of her future husband's family. If her husband died then she would have to marry one of his brother's. And if he lacked his brother's she would have to marry one of his near relatives.
